Welding positions – basic information
When learning to weld, many people focus mainly on equipment and parameters, but an equally important factor is the welding position. It directly affects the difficulty of making a weld, torch handling technique, and the final quality of the joint.
Below you’ll find an overview of the basic welding positions and how they differ.
What are welding positions?
A welding position describes the orientation of the welded part and the direction of the weld in relation to the ground. In simple terms — whether you weld flat, vertically, overhead, or horizontally on a vertical surface.
The more uncomfortable the position, the harder it is to control the weld pool and maintain proper weld shape.
Basic welding positions
1. Flat position (PA)
This is the easiest and most comfortable position.
- Welding is performed on a flat surface
- The weld is made from above
- Gravity helps keep the weld pool in place
Common use: workshop tables, parts that can be rotated
Best for: beginners
2. Horizontal-vertical position (PB)
The workpiece is vertical, but the weld runs horizontally.
- Material is positioned vertically
- The weld bead runs horizontally
- The weld pool tends to sag downward
Requires: better arc control and heat input management
Common in: steel structures, frames, columns
3. Vertical positions (PC / PF / PG)
Welding is performed vertically — either upward or downward.
PF – Vertical up
- better weld quality
- deeper penetration
- slower and more technically demanding
PG – Vertical down
- faster welding
- shallower penetration
- harder weld pool control
This is a higher difficulty level — gravity pulls the molten metal downward.
4. Overhead position (PE)
The most difficult welding position.
- Welding is performed above the welder’s head
- Molten metal tends to drip downward
- Requires high precision and a short arc
Used for: structural assembly, pipe welding, field repairs
Recommended for: experienced welders only
